The population of Beer Sheva is heavily mixed. Amongst others, roughly 8000 Ethiopian immigrants live here. Thanks to generous donations, Keren Hajessod Switzerland was able to erect an Ethiopian community center in Beer Sheva in the 1990s. For this section of the population, which overwhelmingly lives in poverty, the center became a center of vital interest. The heart of the center is the synagogue, which was built in the style of those in their home country. The facilities also accommodate a large communal hall and side rooms for social services. Later, the building was expanded with the addition of a Mikwa (ritual bath) and additional rooms. All in all, this project promotes integration to an exemplary degree, but also shows that this requires great effort, a lot of love, patience and understanding.
The project was inaugurated in 1994.
